Across TCGA pan-cancer cohorts, MT-TR RNA differs between tumor and matched normal tissue in 7 of 18 cancer types tested, making tumor–normal expression one of MT-TR’s most consistent transcriptional readouts.

The strongest signal is observed in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC), where MT-TR RNA is repressed in tumor relative to normal tissue. In most cancer types MT-TR is over-expressed in tumor, although a few such as KIRC and HNSC show the opposite, repressed pattern.

KIRC, HNSC, and BRCA are the cancer types where MT-TR tumor–normal differential expression is most reproducible.
