Across TCGA pan-cancer cohorts, MT-TE RNA differs between tumor and matched normal tissue in 10 of 18 cancer types tested, making tumor–normal expression one of MT-TE’s most consistent transcriptional readouts.

The strongest signal is observed in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC), where MT-TE RNA is repressed in tumor relative to normal tissue. In most cancer types MT-TE is over-expressed in tumor, although a few such as KIRC and HNSC show the opposite, repressed pattern.

KIRC, HNSC, and BLCA are the cancer types where MT-TE tumor–normal differential expression is most reproducible.
