Across TCGA pan-cancer cohorts, SMR3A RNA differs between tumor and matched normal tissue in 6 of 18 cancer types tested, making tumor–normal expression one of SMR3A’s most consistent transcriptional readouts.

The strongest signal is observed in thyroid carcinoma (THCA), where SMR3A RNA is repressed in tumor relative to normal tissue. In most cancer types SMR3A is over-expressed in tumor, although a few such as THCA and HNSC show the opposite, repressed pattern.

THCA, HNSC, and UCEC are the cancer types where SMR3A tumor–normal differential expression is most reproducible.
