Across TCGA pan-cancer cohorts, RTL8C RNA differs between tumor and matched normal tissue in 15 of 18 cancer types tested, making tumor–normal expression one of RTL8C’s most consistent transcriptional readouts.

The strongest signal is observed in kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma (KIRP), where RTL8C RNA is more highly expressed in tumor relative to normal tissue. In most cancer types RTL8C is over-expressed in tumor, although a few such as UCEC and BLCA show the opposite, repressed pattern.

KIRP, HNSC, and UCEC are the cancer types where RTL8C tumor–normal differential expression is most reproducible.
