Across TCGA pan-cancer cohorts, HSD17B8 RNA differs between tumor and matched normal tissue in 11 of 18 cancer types tested, making tumor–normal expression one of HSD17B8’s most consistent transcriptional readouts.

The strongest signal is observed in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC), where HSD17B8 RNA is repressed in tumor relative to normal tissue. In most cancer types HSD17B8 is over-expressed in tumor, although a few such as KIRC and THCA show the opposite, repressed pattern.

KIRC, THCA, and LUAD are the cancer types where HSD17B8 tumor–normal differential expression is most reproducible.
