Across TCGA pan-cancer cohorts, AFP RNA is linked to patient survival in 25 of 34 cancer types, making it the most broadly survival-associated AFP data layer compared with 6 for mutation status.
The strongest signal is observed in mesothelioma (MESO), where higher AFP RNA is associated with worse overall survival. In most high-consensus cancer types, elevated AFP expression acts as an unfavorable survival marker, although some lineages such as READ and ACC show a favorable association.
MESO, HNSC, and KIRP are the cancer types where AFP RNA most reproducibly stratifies survival.
